8/5 A Walk Through Time and Vine

Location: The Alice T. Miner Museum, 9618 U.S. 9, Chazy

The Alice T. Miner Museum will host its second historical and architectural walking tour of Chazy focusing on buildings constructed by William H. Miner between 1910 and 1925, including Gray Gables, the Presbyterian parsonage, and the Delaware & Hudson Railroad Station. Walk or drive from stop to stop -- the choice is yours!

The tour will conclude at Amazing Grace Vineyard and Winery for light appetizers, desserts, and entertainment provided by local jazz musician Steve Collier. A cash wine bar will also be available. Tour cost is $15.00 per person and space is limited. Please contact Jan McCormick to register.

8/13 Learn 10: Identifying Adirondack Trees

Location: The Wild Center, 45 Museum Dr, Tupper Lake

Botanist Dan Spada visits The Wild Center to identify 10 native tree species in the field. He'll instruct you on how to use keys and guides to identify trees and other plants. This program includes a short lab inside to introduce the program and some terminology, then the rest of the time will be spent outside on our trails and in the woods!

Space is limited to 15 participants. Cost: Free but registration is required, museum admission is not included.

8/17 Wild Walk Full Moon Photo Tour with Carl Heilman

Location: The Wild Center, 45 Museum Dr, Tupper Lake

Photograph alongside acclaimed wilderness photographer, Carl Heilman, on The Wild Center’s newest experience: Wild Walk. Utilizing his over 40 years of outdoor photography experience, Carl will provide insight and advice on how to capture the beauty of the wild Adirondacks!

Since we will be in the field most of the day, be sure to bring:

  • food, snacks, water
  • any extra clothing
  • at least one extra fully-charged battery
  • your camera's manual
  • extra memory cards

If conditions are good, we could be photographing until 8:30 PM or later.

Space is limited to 8 participants in these workshops. Cost: $150 for members, $175 for non-members.

8/20 Walking Tour of the Plattsburgh Barracks Hosted by John Krueger, City of Plattsburgh Historian

Location: Clinton County Historical Association and Museum, 98 Ohio Avenue, Plattsburgh

The tour begins with the 1609 discovery of Lake Champlain, delving into the lake's vast military history that led up to the Battle of Plattsburgh, paving the way for what is known today as the Plattsburgh Barracks/Post or simly the Old Base.  At different points having housed the Army, Navy and Air Force, the Plattsburgh Barracks is a treasure of information!

There'll be plenty of historic farming equipment for you to browse through. You can even catch a demonstration of loose hay being gathered and stored! Get your prize tractor out and show it off at the museum -- then take it for a ride to the big village of Peru for our 1st Annual Antique Tractor Ride! The 2016 Tour De Force Charity Run will take place at the Point Au Roche State Park on August 21,2016 to honor the memory of Sargeant Eric P. Loiselle who was struck and killed by a tractor trailer while conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 87 in 2005.  The Tour De Force is pleased to announce that 10% of the proceeds from the August 2016 run will go to local high school seniors who are pursuing a degree in a criminal justice related field. 8/29 Plucky Rooster Contest

Location: Champlain Centre Mall, 60 Smithfield Blvd. Ste. 69, Plattsburgh, NY

Contestants can win in the following categories: Best Plucky Rooster and People's Choice Plucky Rooster. Families, individuals, clubs, and businesses are encouraged to participate. The winning Plucky Rooster will be displayed in the Battle of Plattsburgh Parade on September 10!

Here's the deal:

  • All Plucky Roosters must be in Champlain Centre Mall by Monday, August 29th by 5pm. The Plucky Roosters will be on display Tuesday, August 30th to Monday, September 12th.Voting for People’s Choice is from August 30th-September 8th. 
  • All roosters must have a name and be a minimum of three feet tall.  
  • All Plucky Roosters must be handmade and can be made of any material. 
  • Complete rules and information can also be found on www.cityofplattsburgh-ny.gov or at the Champlain Centre mall office (hallway by food court).

The legend of the Plucky Rooster recalls an incident said to have occurred on September 11, 1814 during a naval battle in Plattsburgh Bay between the British and the Americans (click here for the full legend!)
