9/7 Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration: The Battle of Culver Hill Memorial Ceremony

Location: Culver Hill Historical Park, State Rt. 22, 2 miles north of intersection of Rte. 374 in Beekmantown
Start Time: 11:00:00 AM - End Time: 12:30:00 PM On September 6, 1814, a large British army numbering in the thousands marched through Beekmantown on their way to occupy the Village of Plattsburgh. In an attempt to hinder that advance, a small American force consisting of regular army and militia, made a stand behind stonewalls on the rise of land known as Culver Hill. What ensued was a short but very intense skirmish that resulted in several dead and wounded, including American Corporal Stephen Partridge of the Essex County New York State Militia, and two British officers, Lt. Col. James Willington and Ensign John Chapman, of the Royal East Kent Regiment, Third Foot, also known as the Buffs. For more information visit the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration website.

9/7 Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration: Halsey's Corners Memorial Ceremony

Location: Corner of Halsey Court & Boynton Avenue, Plattsburgh, NY 12901
Start Time: 12:30:00 PM - End Time: 2:00:00 PM In the face of the steadily advancing British column, American forces retreated towards Plattsburgh to this location where they set up two six pound field guns. 9/7 Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration: Beartracks at The Strand Center Theatre

Location: Strand Center Theatre, 25 Brinkerhoff Street, Plattsburgh 12901
Start Time: 7:00:00 PM - End Time: 9:30:00 PM Beartracks was formed in 2004 by Dobro legend Junior Barber and his cousins, Tom Venne and Julie Venne Hogan. Currently, Julie, bass guitar and vocals, Tom, acoustic guitar and vocals and Harry Ralph, fiddle and harmony vocals, form the core of “Beartracks”. They have appeared on stage throughout the US from Colorado to New England, and in Canada from Calgary to PEI. The band has released 5 CD's since 2004 with another in the works at this time. 9/7 Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration: Riverside Cemetery Memorial

Location: Riverside Cemetery, Steltzer Road, Plattsburgh, NY 12901
Start Time: 5:00:00 PM - End Time: 6:00:00 PM British fleet commander Capt. George Downie lost his life in the initial moments of the 1814 battle and was later buried in Riverside Cemetery along with several other fallen combatants from both sides. Start Time: 8:00:00 PM - End Time: 9:30:00 PM Funk/Soul band West End Blend has been playing their version of Funk and Soul in venues all over the Northeast. Fronted by vocalist Erica Bryan, the band pays homage to classic throwback sounds while adding their own distinct vibe and flair. Behind her, the Blend packs a four-piece horn section, two guitars, bass, keyboards and drums. 9/8 Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration: Crab Island Memorial Service

Location: Crab Island, Lake Champlain
Start Time: 11:00:00 AM - End Time: 12:30:00 PM Crab Island was the site of a War of 1812 Army field hospital. It is also the final resting place for at least 150 British and American sailors who perished in the pivotal Battle of Plattsburgh. Hurriedly buried together in a series of trenches, the exact location on Crab Island of this mass grave remains unknown and unmarked to this day. Post 1619 American Legion will lay wreaths, fire a salute, and play taps at this memorial ceremony. Self transport to the island. 9/9 Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration: The Challenge Cup Bateau Race

Location: Samuel De Champlain Monument, Cumberland Ave., Plattsburgh, NY 12901
Start Time: 11:00:00 AM - End Time: 12:00:00 PM This is one of the largest historical boating reenactments in the Northeast, with as many as 15 wooden vessels, hand-built by re-enactors. The boats will start from the mouth of the Saranac River by the Champlain Monument and row to a marker buoy set several hundred yards out in the bay. They will turn around the buoy and return to the river to place First, Second and Third place. This 12th annual BOP Challenge Cup Race will be in full view of spectators standing at the Champlain Monument, with start and finish at the mouth of the Saranac River. Certificates and cash prizes will be awarded to the winners, with the First Place winning boat engraved on the Challenge Cup kept on display at the Kent-Delord House Museum.

Start Time: 10:00:00 AM - End Time: 11:30:00 AM Starting on Terry Gordon Bike Path entrance off of Jay Street, this new addition to the Commemoration schedule is a reenactment that will take place near the US Oval in Plattsburgh. Start Time: 10:00:00 AM - End Time: 4:00:00 PM Have you ever written with a quill pen, made a shingle by hand or spun wool thread? The ever popular guides from the Chateau Ramezay Museum in Montreal will be dressed in period attire and provide interactive demonstrations on a variety of skills including weaving and writing with a quill pen. 9/9 Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration: Quigley Highlander Pipes & Drums

Location: Macdonough Monument, 42 City Hall Pl, Plattsburgh, NY 12901
Start Time: 9:30:00 AM - End Time: 10:00:00 AM For years the Spirit of Scotland Pipes and Drums entertained Plattsburgh audiences during the BOP weekends. Now referred to as the Quigley Highlanders they return to the Battle of Plattsburgh under the direction of band leader Pipe Major Ron Graham. Headquartered in Martintown, Ontario, they play approximately 40 engagements a year throughout southeastern Ontario, western Quebec and eastern New York. Location: Macdonough Monument, 42 City Hall Pl, Plattsburgh, NY 12901
Start Time: 10:00:00 AM - End Time: 4:00:00 PM Overlooking Plattsburgh Bay where the pivotal battle was fought, this 135-ft. monument was built in 1926 to honor Commodore Macdonough’s victory over the British fleet. Clinton County Historical Association will host tours throughout the day! Location: City Hall Place, Plattsburgh, NY 12901
Start Time: 11:00:00 AM - End Time: 12:00:00 PM The Plattsburgh Noon Rotary Club presents the 7th Annual Rotary Bed Race! All five-person teams are encouraged to create and decorate their own entries and arrive in costume. The fastest bed will win $500, with $250 and $100 for the second and third fastest, and one further $150 award will go to the bed voted the best overall theme by a panel of judges. That winning team will receive the coveted Golden Bed Pan Award and bragging rights! Start Time: 11:00:00 AM - End Time: 12:00:00 PM Commodore Macdonough’s flagship, the 144 ft.-long Saratoga, is represented by a 1/12 scale working model built by Tom LaMar. In addition to rudder and sail controls, the 17-ft. replica features a 250-watt sound system and 26 functional black powder firing cannons as well as a concealed motor (propeller) drive, a bow thruster to simulate the 180-degree kedge maneuver that brought to bear the fresh broadside of cannons which greatly helped win the Battle of Plattsburgh. For more information visit the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration website.

Start Time: 1:30:00 PM - End Time: 2:30:00 PM 1814 Naval Engagement on Lake Champlain, viewable from the Champlain Monument with Plattsburgh Bay and Cumberland Head as a back drop, for the first time the total re-enactment will take place on the lake. It will include large sailing ships as well as many smaller bateaux. Former City Historian John Krueger will narrate the military and naval details of the battle, as re-enactors demonstrate how the battle of Plattsburgh was fought. Teams participating will try to get as many of the course ‘loops’ completed between 7a.m.-10a.m. The race will head up the hill from the bandshell below the Macdonough Monument to take a trip down City Hall Place, left onto Bridge Street, left onto Green Street to take Heritage Trail to Dock Street and back to the Macdonough Monument.
