The Civil War in Northern New York

New York State Historian Robert Weible will speak on the Civil War in northern New York, including the role of abolitionists. Mr. Weible will also highlight the NYS Museum Civil War Exhibit, which features the crucial abolitionist role leading up to the Civil War, in the North Country and elsewhere. 7:00 pm, Adirondack Architectural Heritage, 1745 Main St., Keeseville. The Irrepressible Conflict: The Civil War in New York

Robert Weible’s presentation describes the exhibit by the same name at the State Museum that runs through September 22, 2013. The history of New York’s involvement in the Civil War - the state’s role leading up to war, during the war and Reconstruction, and the lasting impact the war had on New Yorkers is told through four major themes: The Coming of War, The Battlefield, The Home Front, and Reconstruction and Legacy. The importance of the abolition activities in New York - including the acquisition of the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation and Gerrit Smith will be included. Join CCHA as Archaeologist Dr. Andrew Black reveals his findings from an excavation site in Coopersville, NY. His findings give us a glimpse into life in an early settlement in Clinton County. Research and recovered artifacts indicate the site was once an early farmstead dating to the late 1790s or very early 1800s. Antique and Classic Car Show

The Biggest Loser RunWalk

The Biggest Loser RunWalk is hosting a Premier Destination race in Plattsburgh. From the first-time runner to the elite athlete, participants are encouraged to get off the couch and hit the pavement with a Half Marathon/5K. Race start time for the 5K is 8am, where participants will start and finish in front of City Hall. The course winds through downtown Plattsburgh and along Lake Champlain. This race is a chip-times race for participants tracking personal goals with special awards given to the top runners and walkers. This event will also include a Kids' one-mile race for ages 4-12 hosted by Kids Fit Foundation. After the race, participants, family and friends can celebrate and relax at the post-race concert featuring former "Biggest Loser" contestant and Nashville recording artist, Dan Evans. What a long-forgotten battle over a New York land title can teach us about freedom, slavery, and a lost link between the antebellum South and the Adirondack wilderness. Independent scholar and Adirondack Life contributor Amy Godine reconstructs the dramatic story of a Maryland slave who came into possession of an Adirondack deed he was never able to use, and the unavailing struggle of his sons and heirs to hold onto their Adirondack patrimony in Essex County and Albany courts -- a court battle that carried into the 20th century. 7:00 pm, at the Peru Free Library, 3024 Main St., Peru 12972. Mini Bus Tour of Underground Railroad sites

Spend the morning hearing the stories and visiting the sites of the underground railroad in Keeseville and Peru. You will learn about the men and women who traveled on the underground railroad and those who provided safe passage to fugitives from slavery. Wilmington/Whiteface 100k

This mountain bike race is a Leadville Qualifying Series race, designed for racers to gain access to compete in the famous 2013 Leadville Trail 100 and an excellent opportunity to race and ride in some of the most beautiful and challenging terrain in the Adirondacks. The race will start and finish at Whiteface Mountain and will explore the jeep roads near Jay and Saddleback Mountains before climbing up the front of Whiteface Mountain which was the site of the 1980's Olympic Winter Games downhill ski races.
