What you may not realize as you're hiking the trails and hanging out with the wildlife at Lake Alice, is that this is a manmade body of water and the result of a series of dams originally built by William H. Miner for hydroelectric generation at his farm across the way - a project that was completed well over 100 years ago.
The William H. Miner Foundation sold the Lake Alice property to New York state in two separate transactions: 650 acres in 1953 and an additional 750 acres in 1963, therefore completing what is now the Lake Alice Wildlife Management Area - a gem of a place open to the public for year round outdoor recreation.
